Marleen Meij and Hugo Overmeen Defend Their Title at the Eighth Triathlon

The fight for the Holten championship during the 38th edition of the Triathlon Holten once again became a target for Hugo Overmeen and Marleen Meij. At the eighth triathlon, both athletes defended their title. Glenn ten Berge and Britt le Fevre also took the local championship. They were the fastest triathletes on the Olympic distance.

The race among the amateurs and the accompanying battle for the Holten championship traditionally forms the finale of the Triathlon Holten. The packed triathlon stadium on the Kalfstermansweide saw on Saturday how Hugo Overmeen and Marleen Meij took the local championship.

For both triathletes, it meant defending their title. Overmeen and Meij also claimed the Holten championship last year. For Overmeen, who was the fastest Holten native among the men, that victory was somewhat of a surprise.

,,The preparation was not optimal,” explained the Holten champion. ,,The cycling was very tough today, and the running didn’t go well at the beginning either, but at a certain point, I happily found my pace. Winning now is quite special.”

Shortly after Overmeen’s arrival, Marleen Meij also crossed the finish line. This secured not only the overall victory among women for the Holtense but also in the battle for the local championship. ,,I wanted to defend my title this year,” said Meij afterward. ,,And besides, it’s simply a super fun race to do. I think you won’t find such a party anywhere else.”

During the award ceremony, Glenn ten Berge and Britt le Fevre were also allowed to stand on the highest podium. Both triathletes claimed the Holten champion title on the Olympic distance. ,,I am certainly satisfied,” Ten Berge was pleased with his victory. ,,The swimming was tough, but luckily I could swim with a group. After one and a half laps, it became difficult, but I didn’t go under. During the transition, I got cramps in both hamstrings, so I had to stretch briefly.”

During the running segment, Ten Berge eventually broke free, realizing that the title was a possibility. ,,I had expected a podium finish anyway, but I didn’t expect to come first. At some point, I was leading, and after two laps, I realized it was a done deal. This will be a super party.”

Britt le Fevre also claimed the Holten title on the Olympic distance. ,,The heat was manageable,” said the Holtense. ,,The cycling was tough, and the running went well. I have been Holten champion twice before, but I’m not as fast as I used to be. Although today, I was three minutes faster than expected. It was a fun day.”
