Extra measures due to hot weather
Already at an early stage, the organization had taken extra measures due to the expected summer temperatures to protect more than 2,000 participants, 15,000 visitors, and over 1,000 volunteers from the heat. For example, additional water stations were added to the running course for participants. Along the route, there were water taps and sunscreen dispensers for volunteers and visitors. Nearby residents were also asked to provide cooling for the recreational runners with sprinklers or showers. This call was widely responded to by the residents of Holten. Additionally, more showers were added at the finish line, and more first aid and other medical care were provided.
All events went on as planned
On Saturday, in close coordination with the mayor, GHOR Twente, Ambulance Oost, first aid, and the medical staff, the organization could decide that it was responsible to run the triathlon for recreational athletes entirely according to the program.
Participants responsibility
The organization also reminded all participating recreational athletes of their own responsibility. Folkert Visser, board member of Triathlon Holten and responsible for the competition component: “We addressed all participants just before the start that it was warm and that they should not expect to deliver top performance due to the weather. Everyone received an email in advance that they would all receive a medal anyway, even if they dropped out along the way. It was nice to see that the recreational athletes seemed to listen to their bodies better. Normally, it’s quickly drink and move on, but this time many people took their rest or cooled off under the sprinklers along the course. It went very smoothly and participants followed our instructions well.”
